The Clayton County Board of Commissioners has been facing a major issue of dysfunctionality for many years, which has resulted in Clayton County being designated by the State of Georgia as a Tier 1 county, meaning an economically distressed county, for over 14 years and counting. Moreover, the Clayton Board has a track record of mismanaging taxpayers' money. For instance, in this month alone, the Board of Commissioners had to approve $1.5 million for a special election for District 1, which could have been avoided if the District 1 Commissioner had resigned in February before the state's deadline. This would have allowed the candidates running for the District 1 seat to be on the Primary General Ballot, saving taxpayers $1.5 million. Unfortunately, this is typical, given the collapse of an $800 million development project and the loss of $559,000 paid to the developer. There has also been a loss of 80 million dollars because of a development project that was never completed, along with numerous lawsuits against the board and lawsuits that Clayton County Board Members have filed against each other and the Board of Commissioners. In response, the Senate passed House Bill 1444 (Clayton County BOC Ethic Code Bill) to refocus the County Board Members on the business of serving the community.
In this race, there are three other candidates campaigning for this open seat, with over 40 years of combined experience as elected officials, two serves as County Commissioners the other Retired Tax Commissioner. However, their leadership for Clayton County has produced 14 years of economic disaster.
On the other hand, Dr. Geffry Tate, as Chairman, promises to bring stability, sustainability, best practices, and data-driven, evidence-based solutions to the Clayton County Board of Commissioners. He aims to change the downfall of Clayton County to an upward trend and bring the community to a Tier 4, similar to our neighboring counties in Metropolitan Atlanta.
